Spot is the going market rate for a troy ounce of pure metal. Treat it as a yardstick, not an offer.
Flip the coin over: the year tells you most of it
For American coins, 1964 is the line. Dimes, quarters and halves dated that year or earlier are 90% silver. After that, only some half dollars kept any.
| Coin | Dates | Silver | Troy oz each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dimes: Barber, Mercury, Roosevelt | Through 1964 | 90% | about 0.072 |
| Quarters: Barber, Standing Liberty, Washington | Through 1964 | 90% | about 0.181 |
| Halves: Barber, Walking Liberty, Franklin, Kennedy | Through 1964 | 90% | about 0.362 |
| Kennedy halves | 1965 to 1970 | 40% | about 0.148 |
| Wartime Jefferson nickels, big mint letter above the building | 1942 (part) to 1945 | 35% | about 0.056 |
| Morgan and Peace dollars | 1878 to 1935 | 90% | about 0.773 |
| Ordinary dimes and quarters | 1965 onward | None | None |
| Ordinary Kennedy halves | 1971 onward | None | None |
A quick test at home
Look at the edge of a quarter. A solid silver-white edge on an older coin is a good sign. A copper stripe down the middle means it is from 1965 or later and holds no silver. It is not proof either way, but it helps you sort before you call.
Where silver usually turns up in a household
Nearly every call we get about silver fits one of these four. Each card opens a page with more detail.
-
Jars and rolls of old change
Silver dimes, quarters and halves saved from pocket change, rolled at a bank or dumped loose in a coffee can.
-
Silver dollars
Morgans and Peace dollars, from a single worn piece in a drawer to rolls kept since a grandparent bought them.
-
Bars, rounds and Eagles
Pressed and poured bars, private-mint rounds and American Silver Eagles in tubes, boxes or plastic flips.
-
Proof sets and albums
Silver coins mixed in with mint sets, proof sets, blue folders and binders. These are best handled as a collection.
Series-by-series detail lives on the silver coins page. If the silver is part of a larger set of albums and folders, start with selling a coin collection instead.
Counting what is inside a roll or tube
Rolls make silver easy to count. These are rough figures for coins as struck; circulated coins come in a touch lighter.
| Roll or tube | Troy oz |
|---|---|
| Tube of 20 Silver Eagles | about 20 |
| Roll of 20 Morgan or Peace dollars | about 15.5 |
| Roll of 20 halves, 1964 or older | about 7.2 |
| Roll of 40 quarters, 1964 or older | about 7.2 |
| Roll of 50 dimes, 1964 or older | about 3.6 |
| Roll of 20 Kennedy halves, 1965 to 1970 | about 2.96 |
Old silver dealers count by face value: every dollar of face in pre-1965 dimes, quarters or halves held about 0.72 troy ounce of silver when new. Sealed bank or Mint rolls can stay sealed. We open and count them with you.
About the photo ID
Texas requires dealers who buy crafted precious metal, such as gold jewelry, to register with the state and keep a record of each seller, which is one reason we ask for a photo ID.
Got a can, a roll or a tube?
Call or send the short form and we will book a weekday time. A rough count helps us plan: how many dollars, how many rolls, about how many ounces of bars.
Telling a Morgan from a Peace dollar
Both are big, heavy and 90% silver. The design and the dates are what set them apart, and collectors treat them as separate series.
Morgan
- Dated 1878 to 1904, plus 1921
- Liberty faces left, with a cap and wheat in her hair
- The mint letter sits under the wreath on the back: CC, O, S, D in 1921, or none for Philadelphia
Peace
- Dated 1921 to 1928, then 1934 and 1935
- A crowned Liberty with flowing hair; the word PEACE on the back
- The mint letter is on the back, near the eagle's wing tip, under the word ONE
Newer dollars with old designs
Since 2021 the Mint has struck Morgan and Peace dollars again as collector coins in .999 silver, each with about 0.858 troy ounce. If your dollar is dated 2021 or later, it is one of these.
Sorting and weighing your silver together
-
Name what is on the table
Step one is naming each piece: the coin, date and mint mark, or what is stamped on the bar or round.
-
Weigh metal in plain sight
You watch the display on every weighing, start to finish.
-
Sort collector value from metal value
Silver mostly comes down to weight times purity. If a coin has collector pull on top, you will hear about it.
-
Show our math, then you choose
We lay out how the number was reached. Accept, pass, or sell only the pieces you want to part with.
Silver made to be stacked
Bullion is sold by weight and purity, and the best pieces print both right on the metal.
-
Silver Eagles
One troy ounce of .999 silver from the U.S. Mint, struck every year since 1986. A full green Mint box holds 500 coins in 25 tubes.
-
Rounds
Coin-shaped but with no face value. Most carry the maker, the weight and .999 right on the design.
-
Bars
From one ounce up to a hundred and beyond. Look for a maker, a weight and a fineness stamp such as .999.
Assay cards, refiners and odd sizes are covered on the bullion page.
What people ask before selling silver
Is my 1967 quarter silver?
No. Dimes and quarters switched to copper and nickel layers starting in 1965. Only the half dollar kept some silver after that, at 40%, and only through 1970.
Is it worth bringing a jar of mixed change?
Yes, if any of it is older than 1965. We sort it with you, pull out the silver and anything a collector would want, and hand back the modern coins.
How many ounces are in a Morgan dollar?
About 0.77 troy ounce of silver. Each original Morgan or Peace dollar weighs 26.73 grams at 90% silver.
Why does a silver offer change from week to week?
Silver trades on world markets every business day. When the market moves, an offer for metal moves with it, so the figure reflects the day you sell.
Can I bring silver and gold to the same appointment?
Yes. Most people have a bit of both. Each metal is weighed and figured on its own, and you decide on each piece.
What should I bring besides the silver?
A valid photo ID, such as a driver's license, a state ID card or a military ID. Original rolls, tubes and boxes help too.
Metal coin or collector coin?
Most silver is bought for what it contains. Some is worth more to a collector, and we point those out as we go.
Usually about the silver
- Well-worn 90% dimes, quarters and halves in common dates
- 40% Kennedy halves from circulation
- Generic bars and rounds
Worth a closer look
- Silver dollars with full, crisp detail
- Scarcer mint letters, such as Carson City Morgans
- Coins that were never spent
- Proof and mint sets in original Mint packaging
Spot is where the math starts
Spot is the market rate for a troy ounce of pure silver in bulk. An offer accounts for how much silver is actually in the piece, its form, any collector interest and what a buyer has to spend to resell it. Try the silver melt value calculator for the metal side; the result is a reference, not an offer.
Getting set before we meet
None of this is required. Bring the silver however it is stored and we will sort it with you.
- Do not scrub off tarnish. Toning is normal on old silver, and cleaning can hurt collector value.
- Leave sets and tubes intact. Original Mint packaging helps identify what you have.
- Make a rough split if it is easy. 1964 and older in one bag, 1965 to 1970 halves in another, newer change set aside.
- Note where things came from. A sticky note saying "bought" or "from change" on each bag is helpful.
- Bring a photo ID. Every seller is asked for one.
