Coin Purchase Evaluations in McKinney, TX
People search for a coin appraisal for very different reasons. Before you book anyone, it helps to know what the number will be used for. We offer purchase evaluations: a close look at your coins, followed by an offer to buy them.
Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, by appointment
- Every weighing happens in front of you
- Photo ID needed at the meeting
- Walk away anytime, no hard feelings
- Appointments only, never a queue
Start with what the number is for
The right kind of look at your coins depends on who will rely on the result. Find your situation below.
-
Covering coins on a policy
An insurance company may want a written appraisal before it lists a valuable collection on your coverage. That is a job for an appraiser.
-
Settling an estate
An estate attorney or CPA may need a documented value for the estate's records. That is a job for an appraiser too.
-
Tax returns and donations
Some tax filings, and gifts of coins to a charity or museum, can call for a value backed by a qualified appraiser.
-
Simply wanting to sell
If you just want to know what someone will pay and maybe sell, a purchase evaluation answers that question directly.
The plain version
You receive an offer to buy, which is different from a written appraisal prepared for insurance, probate or tax purposes. If an insurer, an estate or a tax return needs a figure on paper, an independent appraiser is who you want.
Evaluation and appraisal, row by row
Both involve someone studying your coins carefully. Where they part ways is the reason for the work and what you walk away with.
| Point of comparison | Purchase evaluation (what we do) | Formal written appraisal |
|---|---|---|
| The question it answers | What will this buyer pay for these coins today? | What value can be documented for an insurer, an estate or a tax return? |
| Who does the work | Us, the buyer making the offer | An independent appraiser with no plan to buy |
| What you hold afterward | A spoken explanation of each coin and an offer | A signed report listing the items and a value |
| Where the coins go | Home with you, unless you choose to sell some or all | Home with you, along with the report |
| Accepted for insurance, estate or tax use | No | Yes, when it meets the requirements of whoever asked for it |
Straight answers on appraisals
So do you appraise coins or not?
Not in the formal sense. We do purchase evaluations, which end with an offer to buy. You receive an offer to buy, which is different from a written appraisal prepared for insurance, probate or tax purposes.
Why would an appraisal and your offer come out different?
They answer different questions. An insurance appraisal usually states replacement value, the retail cost of buying the same coins again. Our offer states what we will pay to buy them. Neither number is wrong; they measure different things.
How do I find someone to write a formal appraisal?
Look for an independent appraiser who works with coins and writes reports for your specific purpose. Your insurance agent, attorney or CPA can often suggest a name.
Will I be pressured to sell once you have looked?
No. You hear the offer, ask anything you like, and decide. Leaving with every coin you brought is a normal outcome.
Should I get an appraisal before I sell?
Only if something requires a documented value, such as an estate, an insurer or a tax return. Ask your attorney or CPA in that case. If you only want to sell, a purchase evaluation gives you our offer, and you are free to compare it with others.
Selling, not insuring?
Then a purchase evaluation is the quicker route to an answer, and you can still collect other offers or hire an appraiser before you decide. Call to set a weekday time in McKinney, at your home or at your bank.
What we look at, and what we leave out
We go coin by coin and talk you through it in plain terms.
Covered in a purchase evaluation
- The country, series, date and mint mark of each coin
- Its condition, including wear, nicks and signs of cleaning
- Whether it holds gold or silver, and how much
- Whether collectors or the metal market drive its value
- An offer for the whole group or for just the pieces you pick
Not part of it
- A written appraisal report
- A figure for insurance, estate, tax or donation use
- Professional third-party grading, such as PCGS or NGC
We buy U.S. and world coins, proof and mint sets, gold and silver coins, and whole collections. A handful of loose coins fits our page on selling coins. Shelves of albums belong on selling a coin collection, and key dates and errors are on rare coins.
When you need an appraisal first and a sale later
Plenty of families need both. A formal appraisal can come first, and selling can follow whenever the time is right. One does not block the other.
- Book the independent appraiser if your attorney, CPA or insurer says one is required
- Keep the coins in the same holders and order after the appraisal
- When you are ready to sell, bring the coins and a photo ID
Expect a gap between the figures
Replacement value reflects what a shop would charge to sell you the same coins. An offer to buy will normally sit below that, and the difference is expected.
